Frequently asked questions
How many lakhs are there in one million?
1 million equals 10 lakh. A lakh is 1,00,000 (10⁵) and a million is 1,000,000 (10⁶), so multiply millions by ten — 4.5 million is 45 lakh.
How do I convert millions to crores?
Divide the number of millions by 10. One crore equals 10 million (1,00,00,000), so 250 million is 25 crore, and 4,500 million (4.5 billion) is 450 crore.
How much is 1 billion in crores?
1 billion equals 100 crore (1,00,00,00,000). In the classical South Asian scale this is also called 1 arab. For example, 3.2 billion is 320 crore.
What is a lakh crore?
A lakh crore is 1,00,000 × 1,00,00,000 = 10¹², which is exactly 1 trillion. Indian newspapers use it for budgets and GDP: ₹2 lakh crore means ₹2 trillion.
What comes after crore in the Indian numbering system?
After crore (10⁷) come arab (10⁹), kharab (10¹¹), neel (10¹³), padma (10¹⁵) and shankh (10¹⁷). Each unit is one hundred times the one before it.
Are arab and kharab used in India today?
In Pakistan and in Urdu, arab and kharab are everyday units. Indian English and Hindi media mostly stop at crore and express larger amounts as “lakh crore” instead.
Why are Indian numbers grouped 2,2,3 with commas?
Indian grouping places a comma after the first three digits from the right, then after every two: 45,00,000. The pattern mirrors the units themselves — thousand takes three digits, and every unit after it (lakh, crore, arab…) adds two.
How large a number can this converter handle?
Up to 60 digits, converted exactly. It uses arbitrary-precision integer arithmetic rather than floating point, so even values far beyond a shankh (10¹⁷) are never rounded or corrupted.
