How Indian numbers are read aloud
Writing a number out is where the Indian and international systems visibly part company. 10,00,000 is Ten Lakh in the Indian reading and One Million in the international one — the same quantity, two different sets of unit names. This converter shows both, plus the Hindi and Urdu forms.
The Indian system names a new unit every two digits once you pass a thousand: lakh at 10⁵, crore at 10⁷, arab at 10⁹, kharab at 10¹¹. The international system names one every three digits: thousand, million, billion, trillion.
That is why 1,00,000 is One Lakh rather than One Hundred Thousand, and why a number like 4,50,000 reads Four Lakh Fifty Thousand in India but Four Hundred Fifty Thousand elsewhere.
For money, Indian cheques and forms use the pattern “Rupees … Only”. The closing word Only is not decoration — it seals the phrase so no further words or digits can be appended after it.

How do I write a number in words in the Indian system?
Group the digits Indian-style (2-2-3 from the right), then name each group: crore, lakh, thousand, hundred. 25,00,000 becomes Twenty Five Lakh. The converter above does this exactly for any number up to 60 digits.
What does “Rupees … Only” mean on a cheque?
It is the standard Indian format for writing an amount in words. The word Only closes the phrase so that nothing can be added after it — a small safeguard against tampering.
Are the Hindi and Urdu forms different?
They share the same unit structure (lakh, crore) but use different scripts and some different number words. Hindi is written in Devanagari (दस लाख) and Urdu in Nastaliq, right to left (دس لاکھ).
Does this handle decimals and very large numbers?
Yes. All arithmetic uses arbitrary-precision integers rather than floating point, so numbers far beyond a shankh (10¹⁷) convert digit-for-digit exactly.
